31

Approximately 3 billion people suffer from malnutrition, with 1 in 10 unable to afford a nutritious diet.
Despite the United Nations’ Declaration of Human Rights affirming the right to food and well-being, our food system is broken. The industry prioritizes quantity over quality, profiting from higher taxes on fresh produce and subsidies for processed foods.
Nutritious food has become a luxury.
At Pura, our mission is “to make the world eat healthy.” We believe nutritious food is a fundamental human right. That’s why we’re leading the movement to adopt Article 31, an addition to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, stating that everyone has the right to an accessible and affordable nutritious diet.
Many people think malnutrition simply means “hunger,” but it actually occurs when a person’s diet lacks the right amount of nutrients for healthy functioning. It includes both undernutrition and overnutrition.
Economic, environmental, and social factors, along with poor dietary practices, are main causes of malnutrition. The food industry contributes to this problem by profiting from making less nutritious food more accessible to everyone.
Being able to eat a healthy, nutritious diet is one of our most basic human needs. Yet billions of people go without; they suffer from ‘hidden hunger’, micronutrient deficiencies such as too little iron, calcium, vitamin-A or iodine.
